At Queens Physiotherapy, we integrate acupuncture into our treatments to provide holistic care for our patients. Acupuncture is rooted in a 3,000-year-old Chinese medical philosophy that aims to balance the bodys energy flow. Traditional Chinese acupuncture seeks to address imbalances believed to cause physical and emotional conditions by restoring the natural flow of energy, or Qi (pronounced “Chi”), through the body.
While we respect the origins of acupuncture, as modern physiotherapists, we primarily use a Western approach. This method focuses on pain relief by targeting specific points around problematic joints or muscles, such as those affected by osteoarthritis or conditions like frozen shoulder. Acupuncture works on the pain gate theory to reduce pain by interrupting pain signals in the nervous system.
You might feel a brief sensation when the needle touches the skin and again as it enters the muscle, which may feel like a pinch. This sensation is typically short-lived and mild.
Occasionally, there might be a tiny spot of blood, but this is rare and not a cause for concern.
The risk of infection is extremely low. We use sterile, single-use, in-date needles for every treatment. If you are immune-compromised or taking medication that affects your immunity, please discuss this with your physiotherapist.
Most patients experience immediate relief or a numbing sensation. It is rare for symptoms to worsen after acupuncture. If you do feel discomfort, let us know, or apply a cold pack (wrapped in a towel) to the area for 5–10 minutes.
Acupuncture is generally well-tolerated. Some patients may feel slightly tired after treatment, and fainting is extremely rare—usually related to anxiety around needles. If you are particularly needle-phobic, acupuncture may not be the best option for you.

We use acupuncture as part of a broader treatment plan to help manage:
Our physiotherapists tailor acupuncture treatments to complement your rehabilitation programme, aiming to provide both short-term relief and long-term benefits when combined with exercises.
If you are interested in including acupuncture in your treatment, let your physiotherapist know during your session. They will assess whether it is a suitable option for your specific needs and goals.
